Mercurochrome is a dark red topical antiseptic containing mercury. Before the proliferation of over the counter first aid medicines, and United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, which stopped its manufacture, mercurochrome was used throughout the world to treat minor cuts, scrapes, sores, and other external infectious conditions. This solution contained 2% mercurochrome solution in a one ounce container. The item was applied using the glass applicator device attached to the top rubber stopper of the medication bottle.
