Walt Anderson, the cook, was running a couple of hamburger stands in Wichita, KS, and one of his regulars was Edgar Waldo “Billy” Ingram, an insurance and real estate agent who had an office near one of Walt’s stands. In the early 1920s, Americans were wary of ground beef. In 1906, the novelist and journalist Upton Sinclair published The Jungle, an exposé on the meat industry in Chicago, which shocked and appalled Americans and caused ground beef sales to plummet. Walt and Billy decided to solve that problem. They formed a new restaurant called White Castle and opened it in 1921. The exteriors were white and inside the countertops were all stainless steel. The idea was to create the impression that this was a clean restaurant that served clean little square hamburgers that they called Sliders. And now you can order Impossible™ Sliders at White Castle for those days when you’re not up for making your own! We think the key to a good slider is our Americana sauce. The sauce is a mixture of mayonnaise, ketchup, sriracha sauce, pepperoncinis, and dill pickle relish.
